GOODYEAR, Ariz.—Michael Lorenzen spent his first four seasons with the Cincinnati Reds begging for the possibility to play within the outfield on days the group didn’t use him as a pitcher. He implored his supervisor. When that failed, he escalated his plea to the front-office executives. Nothing satisfied them, and Lorenzen thinks he knows why: fear of attempting something new.
