Teenage tennis megastar Bianca Andreescu was honored twice at the forty-second Canadian Sport Awards on Saturday.
On the heels of her thrilling victory at the U.S. Open, the 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., was named the women’s summer athlete of the 12 months and captured the fans’ choice award for the performance 12 months year.
It’s been a super 12 months for Andreescu. She was ranked 152nd globally in January but now sits at No. 5 after winning three WTA titles this season. Andreescu additionally won the Indian Wells Open in March. In August, she became the first Canadian to win the Rogers Cup Canadian Open title, when you considered Faye Urban in 1969.
Sprinter Aaron Brown won the male summer athlete of the year. Ski pass racer Marielle Thompson earned the lady winter athlete of the year honors, even as moguls celebrity Mikael Kingsbury won the male winter award. Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Parades, who gained gold at the beach volleyball world championships, picked up the summer crew of the year award while Justin Kripps’ four-guy bobsled team won the winter honors. Women’s soccer famous person Christine Sinclair received the True Sport award given to the athlete who best inspires others, whilst race walker Evan Dunfee picked up the Athlete Social Responsibility Award. Basketball’s Michael Linklater provided the Inclusion Award for breaking obstacles in recreation, whilst former Paralympic swimmer Stephanie Dixon received the Bruce Kidd Athlete Leadership Award. Beckie Scott captured the Athlete Voice Award.
